Coach João Paulo “JP” Cerqueira brings a strong blend of international experience, advanced coaching education, and a modern, high-performance approach to player development at Hoover-Vestavia Soccer.
With over eight years of coaching experience across elite youth, academy, and pre-professional environments, JP has worked within respected organizations including the New York Red Bulls, Philadelphia Union, Cedar Stars Academy, Valeo FC (MLS NEXT), and First State FC (NPSL). His background spans both domestic and international settings, including coaching experiences in Brazil, Italy, and England, providing him with a broad understanding of the global game. JP is currently holds a UEFA B License, and has completed advanced coursework in performance analysis through the Barcelona Innovation Hub. His coaching methodology integrates video analysis, tactical periodization, and individualized development planning, ensuring players are developed in line with the demands of the modern game.
At the MLS NEXT level, JP has experience leading and supporting teams across multiple age groups (U13–U17), delivering structured training sessions, opponent scouting, and in-game tactical management. His work includes implementing individualized development plans and collaborating with performance staff to align physical and tactical periodization within a high performance environment. JP is known for his ability to connect with players while maintaining high standards, creating an environment that emphasizes technical quality, tactical understanding, and competitive mentality.
His international perspective, combined with a detail-driven coaching style, supports HVS’s mission of developing complete players and preparing them for the next level of the game. Fluent in Portuguese and English, with working proficiency in Spanish, JP brings strong communication skills and a global perspective that enhances the HVS MLS NEXT program.
